Addressing a Core Problem
For nearly two decades, millions of teachers in nearly 100,000 elementary schools tried to close the achievement gap on tests. Despite that effort, the needle hardly moved. About a third of children still struggle and leave elementary school underperforming.
Why?
Our Project
We are exploring new possible ways to understand and address this problem. Non-traditional teaching methods such as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum program Thinking Through Art allow students to actively exercise their looking and thinking. Studies have shown this technique increases critical thinking—finding evidence to back up an assertion.
Our project is probing attention-thinking coordination (ATC). Is the ability to coordinate attention and thinking an overlooked key to learning in elementary school? Can it be developed as a means to unlock improved learning for those who are often ‘left behind’?
